Who are the Psychoanalysts?
The term 'psychoanalytic' is often used in its broadest meaning, although it describes a strictly defined professional profile.
Dr. Katz

Psychoanalyst is the one that underwent and completed educative procedure, according to the standards and criteria prescribed and authorized by the IPA - International Psychoanalytic Association. The role of IPA is maintaining professional and training standards throughout the world. It has more than 11000 members. Belgrade Psychoanalytical (Provisional) Society (BP(P)S) is a recognized member of IPA and the European Psychoanalytic Federation (EPF). Its members are also members of both IPA and EPF, with certificates that are uniform and recognized throughout the world.

Position of a psychoanalyst in relation to his client is a very responsible one. There are possibilities of abuse and malpractice. For that reason, screening before the training, as well as the very training, are very strict. It is not only significant theoretical and clinical knowledge that are requested, followed and supervised during the education, but also self-discovering and resolving the one's own, previously not recognized psychological difficulties during personal analysis. Personal analysis is the necessary part of the training; assisting understanding of the patient and not imposing own solutions. It is a long process of educating candidates. Candidates are mostly psychiatrists or clinical psychologists by profession, but sometimes are also recruited from other professions and get additional education on the theory of psychoanalysis and clinical practice.
